Black Bamboo: Beautiful or Bothersome?

Bamboo is a great option for those looking for a little privacy on their property with how quickly it grows as well as how dense it can get. For this same reason, some people can’t wait to remove bamboo off their property. Without proper control, it will be invasive.

Black Bamboo is an incredibly hardy plant but something interesting is starting to happn in the PNW. All across the PNW, these plants are beginning to go to seed and die. Despite being as hardy as they are, every 40-60 years, Black Bamboo will seed then die as apart of their natural life cycle.

So why are so many dying at the same time? To put it simply, many of the Black Bamboo plants across the PNW stem from the same mother plant, meaning that they are all the same, or similar, DNA. Same DNA means same timeline.

If you’re asking what we can do to stop it, remember hat plants also belong in the circle of life therefore seeding and dying is natural. Best thing to do next is to collect those seeds and replant them for their next life cycle. Or give Ahimsa Gardens a call.
